Until a few years ago in Europe hops were almost solely pressed into round farmers' bales (LB). Meanwhile rectangular bales (RB) are increasingly gaining ground for logistic reasons. Transport, storage and handling can be managed much more rationally. Another advantage is that as the RBs are easier to stack, the cold storage which is kinder to the quality can be realised technically and economically.
Hops are pressed more compactly than in LB. Tests showed that with a net weight of up to 60 kilos per RB no damage occurred to the lupulin glands and therefore the quality of the hops is guaranteed even up to a stacking height of 12 sacks.
