The second largest hop-growing region is situated in Baden-Wurttemberg north of Lake Constance and is concentrated around the town of Tettnang. The history of hop-growing can be traced back to the beginning of the 12th century; but it only gained economic importance from the mid-19th century onwards. Although Tettnang only contests approx. 7% of the total German hop production with regard to acreage and crops, it is among the leading producers of very fine aroma hops worldwide. Tettnang has made a name for itself far across the boundaries. Consequently master brewers all over the world prize the "green gold" from Tettnang - once home to the Counts of Montfort - to improve their beer specialities in the "premium range". The overwhelming majority of its hop-growers have practised the integrated, controlled production since 1993 and market their hops under the Baden-Wurttemberg origin and quality label. The same year the Independent Quality Appraisal was established. The four kilometre hop educational path and the "Tettnang Hop Museum" in Tettnang-Siggenweiler are evidence of the long history of this hop-growing region which is rich in tradition.
