The Hallertau in Bavaria is the largest single hop-growing region in the world with over 14,000 hectares and more than 1,300 hop farms (in 2005). It encompasses 15 seal districts and produces well over a fifth of the annual hop crop worldwide. Hop-growing has a long tradition in the Hallertau, but remained localised up until the 16th century. Bigger, single production areas gradually developed from the initially scattered hop farms which facilitated the essential mechanisation and automation. The fact that it has maintained its leading position until the present day is due to the farmers' specialist knowledge, modern production methods, innovative research facilities, highly competitive marketing structures as well as great adaptability to the requirements of the global hop market. The incorporation of the hop production in the quality management system and certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001 for example are evidence of the hop-growers' future-oriented outlook. The hop processing works in the Hallertau run i.a. by the HVG are among the best in the world as far as technology and capacity are concerned. Hersbruck became a Hallertauer seal district in 2004 and from then onwards the acreage and crops are accounted for under the Hallertau.
